Notes: Director: John Cromwell; During the 30’s and early 40’s the Motion Picture Production Code, or the Hays Code as it became known, with Joseph Breen at its helm, made it virtually impossible for the main studios in Hollywood to make any movie that would embarrass Germany or make the Nazis look bad. Any reference to anti-Semitism was forbidden under the excuse that it violated the Neutrality Act, and contrary to America’s Isolationist policy. Add to that Breen’s obsessive and frequent consultations, with the German consul in Los Angeles of all people, to determine what was appropriate content in upcoming films, and it becomes clear why Hollywood was so timid at the time, in its dealings with what was going on in Europe in general, and with Jews in particular. In this movie, that deals with refugees running around all over Europe in search of a semblance of a safe haven, we meets many characters. One of them is a young Jewish woman, Margaret Sullavan, and another is a “half-Aryan” young man, Glenn Ford, which was Hollywood’s code name for half-Jewish. But these references are so brief that if you blink - you miss it!
