| Notes: Director: Yosef Millo; This Israeli movie is based on an iconic novel by the same title, written by Moshe Shamir and published in 1947, in pre-Israel Palestine. It is considered one of the central works in the revived Hebrew literature. The hero of the story, a Kibutznik and a Palmachnik, would become instrumental in shaping the future image of the mythological Israeli “Sabra”. And so it was fortuitous that the title role would go to Assi(Assaf) Dayan, who was the son of the legendary Moshe Dayan, Israel’s illustrious General, Chief-of-Staff, and Minister of Defence. Assi Dayan made his debut in this film, and went on to become one of the most important figures in Israeli cinema. |
