Notes: Director: Latif Faiziyev; A Russian movie with a Jewish motif is a rare commodity, and when it comes to the subject of The Holocaust it is almost unheard of, especially so under the Soviet regime. Why this should be so is too large a topic to cover here, suffice it to say that Soviet Russia refused to acknowledge that Jews were a special target of the Nazis and their collaborators. It is thus very surprising to discover this movie, and the fact that it comes from such an unlikely place as Uzbekistan (part of the USSR, in 1969) makes it an exotic rarity indeed. The story takes place in the late 60’s. A museum in Uzbekistan mounts an exhibition showcasing paintings by a Holocaust survivor, documenting his harrowing experience while in a concentration camp during WWII. A woman attending the exhibit believes that one of the paintings is of her deceased husband. She embarks on a long journey to find out details of her beloved. While one or more inmates of this (imagined) concentration camp are portrayed as Jews, it is possible that this movie escaped Soviet censorship because the final message of the movie is that through solidarity of inmates of many different languages and nationalities, a powerful bond was forged that ultimately won in the struggle against the Nazi enemy. Thus, the Holocaust is made to be a universal experience which was more in line with Soviet government agenda. |
