| Notes: Director: Larry Peerce; Based on a Philip Roth novella(included in his first book), and starring Ali MacGraw in essentially her first role, the movie enjoyed both box-office and critical success. It’s subject matter - the assimilating American Jews – with their nouveau riche concerns of economic class distinction, was quite an eye opener for the general public, and when you add to that the subject of pre-marital sex, that was dealt with at length, you understand why the movie was much discussed in it’s day. The film, however, was not free of controversy, as was also the case in future works by Philip Roth. Segments within the Jewish community felt that the portrayal of some characters was less than flattering, going even as far as calling Roth….a self-hating Jew. |
