| Notes: Director: Mark Rydell; A Jewish character in a straight Western, not a spoof, is a very rare commodity indeed. The Cowboys is one such exceptions. In this, well regarded John Wayne film, when his regular cow hands abandon him, he’s forced to rely on a bunch of young school kids he hires, to join him on a rough 400 miles cattle drive. The boys rise to the occasion, and against all odds do the job admirably. And so do the eleven wonderful young actors who are portraying them, and to whom goes most of the credit for the success of this film. One of the boys, Charlie Schwartz, portrayed by a young actor named Stephen Hudis, is unfortunately missing from this particular group shot, but if you look carefully, you’ll notice his mention in the promo in this Half Sheet. Stephen Hudis went on to have a successful career as an actor and stuntman. |
