Notes: Director: Jose Ferrer; The second American attempt to retell the story of the Dreyfus Affair, where a French Army captain is wrongly accused of treason, found guilty in an infamous trial, stripped of his rank, and sent off to Devil's Island. In a subsequent retrial, championed by French novelist Emil Zola, the Army's mistake and subsequent coverup is exposed, and yet he was only pardoned but the Army would not rescind their accusation of treason. It was only later, when another offices has confessed to the treacherous act, that Dreyfus name was cleared, and his rank restored. There was no other possible explanation to that whole affair, other than the fact that Alfred Dreyfus was a Jew. The ‘Affair’ as it has come to be known in France, was a political scandal that has shaken France, and indeed Europe, in the late 19th century. It has come to symbolize modern miscarriage of justice and antisemitism. It is therefore somewhat surprising that this American film, titled “I Accuse”, would be shown in France under the French, more ‘in-your-face’ title: L’Affaire Dreyfus. In 1937 Hollywood had it’s first stab at telling the story in a film titled The Life of Emil Zola, however, the Jewish or antisemitic aspect of the case was so obscured as to require a magnifying glass to spot it.
