Notes: Director: Harry Beaumont; In the early 30’s musicals were very much in vogue in Hollywood. A number of Jewish actors have supplied the comic relief in those movies, and regardless of the character’s name or his role in the plot, as soon as they walked onto the set, you knew they were supposed to be Jewish, whether from their looks, accent, or mannerisms. One such actor was Benny Rubin. He usually didn’t play leads, but found steady work as a singing, dancing funnyman between 1928-1935. This movie is no exception. The plot revolves around the romance between a Jewish singer songwriter(Lawrence Gray) and a Gentile socialite, interfaith marriage and assimilation. Nothing unique about that theme, except that this film was based on a play that hinted on the real-life relationship between songwriter Irving Berkin and Long Island socialite Ellin Mackay, which was all over the gossip columns in the late 1920’s. |
