Notes: Director: John Cromwell; A story based on Erich Maria Remarque’s novel, Flotsam, follows a group of individuals, each from a different background and different circumstance, but all are stateless refugees in flight across Europe of WW2. Escaping with their lives from the clutches of the advancing Germans was just the beginning of their troubles. For being without a passport, and having been stripped of their citizenship those individuals, and masses like them, were fair game to the whims and cruelty of any policeman, bureaucrat, or plain snitch. In spite of their miserable existence, the movie manages to bring us many moments of tenderness, comradery, and even joy and hope. This remarkably endearing movie owes a lot of its success to the first rate cast, which in addition to the main actors given credit here in this poster,(note young Glenn Ford in one of his early roles), includes a whole battery of first rate supporting actors like Leonid Kinskey, Roman Bohnen, Sig Ruman, Hans Schumm(labeled as “Nazi swine par excellence” by IMDb), Philip Van Zandt, Alexander Granach, Lionel Royce and Ernst Deutsch. |
