| Notes: Director: John Frankenheimer; Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name, by Bernard Malamud, which in turn was inspired by a 1913 trial of a Russian Jew, falsely accused of a ritual murder of a Ukrainian boy. Jews of Europe have experienced throughout the ages numerous such false accusations, based on no more than wild rumors, and primitive and ignorant beliefs, which in many cases were the spark for a wider pogrom, resulting in widespread attacks and numerous deaths. Those accusations became known as Blood libels. The name stems from the absurd assertion that Jews require blood from young Christian children for the baking of matza for Passover. The screenplay was written by Dalton Trumbo. Alan Bates turned in a memorable performance that earned him an Academy Award Nomination for Best Actor. |
