| Notes: Director: Michal Waszynnski; Based on a 1914 play by S.Ansky that is considered a seminal work in Jewish culture, and a cornerstone in the repertoire of Yiddish and Israeli theatre. The movie is likewise considered one of the finest in the golden age of Yiddish cinema. The film is rich with images and customs of Jewish life in the shtetl in days gone by at the Pale of settlement. The plot however, is quite unusual, as it revolves around mystic characters, Kabbalah, possession by a dead spirit, and exorcism. The movie is a Polish production shot in Yiddish.
