Notes: Director: Joshua Z Weinstein ; A film that offers a rare and honest glimpse into the isolated Chasidic community of Borough Park, Brooklyn, which is the home to a very large Orthodox Jewish neighborhood. The story revolves around a recently widowed man, and the tender relationship between him and his only son, that the all-powerful Rebbe has decided he cannot provide a suitable environment for the proper upbringing of the young boy, on account of his being single, and of limited financial means. The boy is entrusted to the care of his aunt and uncle, who look down on Menashe, the poor widower. The boy and his father are trying to make the best out of the situation during their weekly get-togethers. Most of the dialog is in Yiddish. For most of the amateur actors this is a first-time experience. In fact, many have never even been to a movie. Yet the performances are outstanding, and heartfelt. |
