Notes: Director: Anatole Litvak ; As was many times the case in Hollywood, especially during the 40’s, when a book or a play was adopted to the screen, suddenly Jewish characters had their name changed to a more pleasing, “American” name. This was done to please Nazi Germany which represented a large portion of Hollywood’s overseas market, which carried a growing importance during the war years. It also served to appease certain segments in American society that championed the Isolationist ideology. This particular movie is based on a play by Irwin Shaw. Two of the main characters, played by Thomas Mitchell and Ida Lupino, as a poor Jewish father and daughter in New York’s lower East Side, had their name changed from Goodman in the play, to Goodwin, and all references to their Jewishness removed. This way, they believed, problems were eliminated. And reactions to the film? It was criticized for deviating from the play... |
