Notes: Director: Jerzy Zarzycki ; This is a Polish WWII movie. The original title for this movie was Robinson Warszawski, as befitting a survivor roaming around the rubbles that was once Warsaw. The movie was made in 1948, however by that time the Soviet control and influence affected film content as well, and a revised and censored version was released in 1950 retitled Unvanquished City, with a much more favorable depiction of the Red Army. The film deals with the underground Polish fighters in the aftermath of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. There are a number of Jewish characters in the plot. The story was inspired by the memoirs of Wladyslaw Szpilman which was also the basis for the 2002 American movie The Pianist. |
