Notes: Director: J. Lee Thompson; An action film set in WW2, where the French Resistance organizes an escape for a scientist and his family, across the Pyrenees Mountains to neutral Spain. Aided by a tough and wily Basque sheppard(Anthony Quinn), with the Germans, headed by a crazed Nazi officer(McDowell), in hot pursuit, the family goes through many hair raising situations in their attempt to save their lives and reach the presumed safety in the new destination. The movie is based on the novel Perilous Passage by Bruce Nicolaysen, where the fleeing family in this heroic escape is Jewish. The movie version completely omits their Jewish identity. The practice by Hollywood to de-Judaize source material, by removing any reference to Jews in the process of adopting novels, plays, or historical events to film goes back to the 40’s and even earlier. The reasons for that are many and differ from case to case, but what is interesting in this movie is the fact that the author of the novel is also the person who wrote the script! Somebody high-up in the decision making department must have thought that removing any reference to the family’s Jewishness would be better. |
