| Notes: Director: Michael Curtiz; Warner Brothers studio attempting to do the best they can to expose the Nazi regime in Germany for what they were, but in 1935 America, with the Neutrality Act having been passed, and the self policing restriction by Hollywood in place in the form of the Production Code, their hands were pretty much tied. They still released this movie which was based on a real life event where an immigrant coal miner in Pennsylvania was murdered when extreme elements, Black Legion style, resorted to violent tactics in their opposition to workers union. The idea was to show that extreme elements that are determined to destroy organized labor by violent means, are in fact fascists who are doing the same thing that Hitler did when he assumed power. |
