| Notes: Director: Raoul Walsh; Based on the debut novel by Norman Mailer, and considered to be one of the greatest English-language novels. The film follows a G.I. platoon on a mission against the Japanese in the jungles of the Pacific during WWII. There are a number of unsavory characters in the movie, specifically the ones portrayed by Raymond Massey and Aldo Ray who carry on as though the war was their private affair. As is the case in many so-called "Platoon Movies", where there is an attempt to construct each unit as an ideal microcosm of America, with every ethnic group neatly represented, The Naked and the Dead is no exception. In the platoon here there is not one, but two Jewish G.I.'s. They both appear in this still, represented by Joey Bishop and Jerry Paris, both incidentally are Jewish in real life. |
