Notes: Director: Barbra Streisand ; A super ambitious project and a labor of love by Barbra Streisand who invested 10 years developing this highly personal project, adopting a short story by Isaac Bashevis Singer and creating a romantic musical drama film that she produced, directed, wrote, starred in, and sang all the musical numbers. It is a story of a young woman in an Eastern European shtetl, whose father indulged her by privately teaching her the Torah and Talmud, which in those days only boys were entitled to such learnings. Upon her father’s passing, the girl, Yentl, decides to assume a boys’ persona, and moves to a larger town where she planned to pass as an aspiring Yeshiva boy and satisfy her insatiable thirst to enrich and expand her learning of religious studies. Under this disguise she went on to become a brilliant student, but complications arise when a young woman falls in love with her/him and the well to do parents want them to marry. The movie received favorable reviews and was successful enough at the box office, however Bashevis Singer was critical of the liberties Streisand took with the story and direction.
