Notes: Director: Sandra Goldbacher; What do you know about the life of Sephardic Jews in 1830’s London? Exactly! Well, this is one reason to add this movie to your “movies to watch” list. Another reason is, that it is an excellent movie. It’s about a young Jewish woman, part of the Sephardic enclave that existed in the early 19th Century London. Her protected existence, surrounded by the love and warmth of her family, suddenly comes to a halt with the tragic death of her father. For a young woman in that period the options for financial viability were extremely limited, especially when an arranged marriage is rejected out of hand because the element of love is usually absent in those cases. Rosina da Silva, the heroine in this story, wouldn’t have any of it, and as the eldest daughter she is determined to support herself and her family. Using her classical education, intelligence, and self-confidence, she’s posing as a gentile and secures a position of a governess on a remote Scottish island. To echo her “exotic” heritage the soundtrack includes melodies employing mid-Eastern musical instruments as well as songs performed in Ladino by the late Ofra Haza, one of Israel premier songstresses. |
