Notes: Director: Vidor King; Filming was taking place in Madrid, Spain. While shooting a duel of sword fighting between Tyrone Power and George Sanders, Tyrone collapsed and died soon after, in the ambulance, on the way to the hospital. This event has left everyone in shock. Thoughts of scrapping the whole project were proposed but finally it was decided to re-shoot the film with Yul Brynner, a friend of Power, replacing him in the role of King Solomon. Attempts were made to use existing footage of battle sequences and the like, in the final cut, in an effort to minimize cost. Some claim the in a few long shots that survived, it is possible to make out Tyrone Power’s image. This Still of Tyrone Power and Gina Lollobrigida, from the original shoot, is dated Nov. 1958, about a year before the final version hit the screens in Oct. 1959. The still is a UPI TELEPHOTO announcing the star’s death. There is an interesting footnote to this story. It’s a matter of fact that Lollobrigida was the first star to sign up for this project. Tyrone Power turned down the role of King Solomon, as did Yul Brynner, but after the script was re-written Power agreed to accept the part. It is just a twist of fate that Yul Brynner ended up with the role just the same, but by doing so missed out on the opportunity of playing the role of Spartacus, which eventually was done by Kirk Douglas in 1960. |
