Notes: Director: Dennis Dugan; Some people in the movie industry consider this film to be the turn in Sandler’s career that will include quality acting and more mature roles. Sure, there are still the usual immature Sandler jokes, but these are balance with tenderness and sentimentality. Some even believe that it’s the story of the film that is responsible for this shift. Here, Sandler is dumped by his girlfriend for refusing to take responsibility like an adult, but one day a child is dropped at his doorstep, and he is forced to care for the kid. Parenting made him grow up quickly. The movie was one of the top grossing films of 1999, but as is the case concerning a lot of his work, the critics are divided as to its merit. On one end the film is nominated for five Razzies, but even Rotten Tomatoes agree that Adam Sandler acquits himself admirably. Esquire magazine even goes as far as ranking it No. 1 movie of Sandler’s career. Adam Sandler’s character is named Sonny Koufax, undoubtedly a nod towards Sandy Koufax, the legendary pitcher of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers who would not pitch in game 1 of the 1965 World Series because it fell on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which made him an icon in the American Jewish community. |
