| Notes: Director: Paul Thomas Anderson; Most times a coming-of-age movie is popular with moviegoers but panned by critics. With Licorice Pizza the reverse happened. The movie did not do well at the box office but was acclaimed by critics. So much so that it received three Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and many other nominations and awards followed. The movie did not escape controversy, however. The two main characters, portrayed by Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman, for both of whom this was a movie debut, are dating and eventually falling in love, however the young woman is 10 years the boys’ senior. It sounds like a big gap, and probably illegal as well, but the movie doesn’t treat it as an issue, and the two youngster pull it off very naturally, probably because Cooper Hoffman, Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s son, gives a very mature performance. Got his father’s genes. The title of the movie, Licorice Pizza, is a nickname for vinyl records, and was also the name of a Los Angeles record store chain. |
