| Notes: Director: Sammi Cohen; Adam Sandler here, is taking a back seat and leaves the center stage to his younger daughter, Sunny Sandler, the Bat Mitzvah girl, who is giving an outstanding performance. As befitting a coming-of-age movie, the adults are in the background and relegated to supporting roles. So much so, that Sandler’s longest scene, when he has a fight with his daughter, is taking place when he is off camera and only his voice is heard. A very interesting and unselfish gesture by a generous and caring father. Incidentally, his wife Jackie, and his other daughter, Sadie, are also in the movie, and both girls are cast as his daughters. It’s clear to see that Adam Sandler is simply kvelling while looking at his two talented daughters. Sunny Sandler’s friends and classmates are an amazing group of youngsters of such diverse backgrounds and ethnicities, even though most apparently are Jewish, in whole or in part. Names such as the super-cool Kym Chang Cohen, or Sunny’s BFF Lydia Rodriguez Katz, who turns in a knockout performance, or Megan Levy with her beaded Afro-braids, are thrown about so matter-of-factly, like “oh, is that not like it is in your school?”. An interesting side note is the fact that one boy, Mateo, who’s an exchange student from Ecuador and professes to attending church every Sunday, serves as a moral compass of the group. And we haven’t said anything about Women Power. So, here we go: Other than the fact that the focus of the film is on young women, even the Rabbi happens to be a woman, and she’s trying awfully hard to be hip and cool, to the total indifference of the kids. The director, Sammi Cohen is a woman. The movie is based on a novel by Fiona Rosenbloom, which is a pseudonym for Amanda Stern. Scripted by Alison Peck. Music by Amanda Yamate and Este Haim of the popular girl’s rock group Haim. The movie was shot in and around Toronto, Canada. The famous ledge jump was filmed in Elora Quarry Conservation Area, about 100km NE of Toronto. The poster is a 27x40 commercial print.
