Notes: Directors: Basil Dean, Thorold Dickinson; Ferdinand de Levis, the Basil Rathbone character, is invited to an upper-class house party. Being the only Jew, even though he is young, educated, well-dressed and wealthy, he’s an outsider. At the party, a considerable sum of money is stolen from his room. Visibly upset, he notifies his hosts about it, but is being advised to keep quiet about the matter while the rest of the guests, his supposed friends, sneer with contempt at what they perceived was an ungentlemanly accusation. Realizing that he isn’t even getting sympathy for his predicament, de Levis decides to call in the police. When their search fails to come up with any clue, de Levis points to the guest he believes is the thief, based on his own observations. The guests are appalled at his gall, how dare he, a mere Jew, call into question the integrity of a “real” gentleman? They urge the accused, Capt. Dancy (Miles Mander) sue for libel. In court, during the trial, some unexpected facts are presented that prove that Dancy did in fact steal the money, to which he later confesses. Knowing that charges will undoubtedly follow, and he will be jailed and disgraced, Dancy, in a private moment, concedes and begs his wife’s forgiveness, yet even then comes ups with lame excuses on why he wasn’t wrong stealing from the wealthy Jew. Dancy then gets a surprise visit from de Levis who tells him that he does not harbor ill feelings towards him and does not want to have his money returned. They are interrupted by knocks on the door, his wife tells him it’s the police, and Dancy jumps to his death from the balcony. |
