Notes: Director: Jules Dassin; A highly influential film that was selected for preservation in the American National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. It details a police investigation of a murder in New York City. The City itself, its flavour, and unique and unmistakable locations, are prominently featured and thus becoming a central element in the dynamic pace of the movie. No neighborhood shines more in The Naked City than the Lower East Side, its Jewish heritage on display in nearly every shot. In the scene here, Molly Picon as a Jewish waitress at the soda fountain at the corner of Norfolk and Rivington, gives police Detective Don Taylor a look that says, ‘I’m not sure I buy your story’. The film includes a lot of outdoor “on location” shots of New York, which necessitates the appearance of many extras, without or very few lines. For the purpose of authenticity I suppose, the extended cast is peppered with a large number of Jewish character actors among which one can spot the above mentioned Molly Picon, as well as Celia Adler, John Marley, David Opatoshu, Nehemiah Persoff, and John Randolph. The film has won Academy Awards for Cinematography and Film Editing. Producer Mark Hellinger is also the Narrator of the film, at the end of which he says the iconic line: “There are eight million stories in the naked city; this has been one of them”. |
