Notes: Director: David O. Russel; A friendship that was forged during WWI, between a Jew (well, half), and a Black, and the deep bond that developed and made it last into the 30’s, aided by the third leg of the triangle, in the shape of a beautiful blonde, should be enough to lead us towards a brighter future. Or is it? Bale must endure the anti-Semitism that emanates from his well to do in-laws, while Washington and Margot Robbie’s romance doesn’t stand a chance in the U.S. of the 30’s. Events of a global scale pit them against a white supremacist, fascist plot, conspiring to overthrow the Democratic government and instate a right-wing dictatorship in its place. All that while trying to clear themselves of a murder they did not commit. It’s a long and convoluted plot to be sure, and the whole premise sounds too far-fetched. Amazingly, the conspiracy to oust FDR is loosely based on the 1933, so called Business Plot. A 369th Infantry Regiment did exist, fought in France in World War 1, and consisted of African Americans. The cast includes an amazing line-up of A-list stars. |
