Notes: Director: Mel Brooks; A once-great Broadway producer, Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel), has fallen on hard times. His accountant, meek but not entirely devoid of talent, Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder), points out to Max that under certain circumstances, one can make more money out of a failed production than from one that’s a success. Thus, the two greedy “heroes” are set about to produce a sure-to-fail production. Something that is guaranteed to offend everyone. How about a comedy, full of grand and gay musical numbers, about the life of Adolf Hitler? Add to that a fancy-shmancy, dopehead flower-child Lorenzo St. DuBois – L.S.D. (Dick Shawn), in the title role of the beloved Fuhrer, and you begin to have the necessary ingredients for a total bust. The pair begin raise money from innocent investors, like there’s no tomorrow, assured that they will not have to pay it back because the play will be a disaster, and close after the first night. In the end the play is a smash, viewed by critics and the public as a brilliant satire, and Max and Leo end up in prison. |
